i have depression and i take BUPROPION HCL XL 300mg TABWAT and when i was just taking it, i started losing weight and feeling really energetic but my medicine made me have really bad anxiety. So i went to my doctor and he prescribed BUSPIRONE HCL 15mg and ever since I’ve taken it I’ve been tired and I’ve been eating kinda a lot but my anxiety has gone down a lot. Is it normal for that to happen?

Yes, continue to discuss even if only by phone, how the meds make you feel, it can take time to get them to work together, and amounts taken might be changed. One thing to realise is that medications are not magical fixes. And those who do not need to take medications do not wake up joufully and totally refreshed and energized each and every morning, those who take no meds, have to often just do it just make themself get up, shower to wake up, think pleasant thoughts and get on with thier day. I dont know if you knew that or not, so just realise, give meds time, discuss with your Dr and try to keep a positive outlook on things that bring you down. Life is not all roses for people, although it can appear that way. Give any new medication the max time the doc says it will take to notice the differences. These kinds of meds are not like taking an aspirin and our heachache goes away, they need to get worked into our system and slowy alter how its funcitoning, yes sometimes you feel somehting new after taking it, that is not usually the end result that the Dr is hoping for so dont give up until the 3 or more weeks pass by. Good catch watching your weight, its better to be alil heavy and happy than scrawny and miserable.

After a long period of time from using the medicine you should usually notice a change in your attitude in certain situations but its hard to notice anything at first.

Its always a good idea to read the printed material that comes with the med’s. The responses you experience may be common with a particular drug. You also have to let your doc know your reactions to new drugs. That’s the only way s/he can adjust your dosage or change med’s, as appropriate. Sometimes you have to try several different med’s to find the one that works best for you, especially with so many different drugs on the market that purport to do the same thing.

The pills you are taking are attempting to TEMPORARILY solve a chemical imbalance in your brain. They may be over/under compensating or extracting some hormones in your brain, and that could be the cause of your anxiety, weight loss, etc.

Try alternative medicine to fix your problem. The pills you are taking will never fully get rid of your anxiety, depression, etc. They are also terrible for your liver. Unless you want to be dependent (and you dependency will likely increase as your brain adapts to the drugs) try getting to the root of the problem and solving it with an alternative medicine doctor.

If you have the right dose of the right medicine, you won’t have the negative side effects. You may need to try other things. For instance, my anti anxiety medication does nothing to me but make me feel calm. It doesn’t make me into a zombie or put me to sleep or depressed or anything else that other people claim to have. It took several tries on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications but eventually the right dosage and prescription should just make you "normal".

I took AD HD medicine for 4 years and so did my sister. Our bodies were stunned and we didn’t grow or develop. Her period didn’t arrive when she was 12 like it was supposed to. It came when she quit taking it at the age of 14. I took another medication and dropped my old one. I gained A LOT of weight and ended up being overweight a little over the average weight for girls my age. I dropped that one and took Straterra. I eat fine, but now I feel nauseated every day. I healthy and have the average weight for a twelve year old. So your always gonna have SOME kind of side-affect to every medicine. So yea, it’s normal.

The increased appetite may be normal as a side effect, but I don’t think anyone wants to gain weight from their meds. If you aren’t satisfied with Buspirone HCL due to increased appetite and you still have some anxiety (even if it has decreased), then try asking your psychiatrist about prescribing you Celexa (a.k.a. Lexapro). It is an SSRI antidepressant that is designed to help with all sorts of anxiety disorders as well. It has worked wonders for me. I’ve tried all the other antidepressants (which all made me sick as a dog), and I’ve found that this is the one that has the least side effects (slight fatigue — a minor price to pay for the benefit). I’m sure you already know that all medications come along with unpleasant side effects. It’s just a matter of you deciding whether or not the costs (side effects) outweigh the benefits of the medication. Good luck and I hope that you find what works best for you. :)

Myself — I’ve been battling chronic depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia for 15 years now, and have pretty much tried every pill known in the world of pharmaceuticals. Over the years, I have done extensive self-education on medications and disorders. Also, I’m a licensed massage therapist who knows about homeopathic remedies. After years of trying homepathic remedies out the wazoo to no avail, I strongly believe pharmaceuticals work best with depression/anxiety (period). In addition, I’m currently working towards a Bachelors in Nursing.
