My sister was recently diagnosed with a Stage IV glioblastoma (brain tumor). She had surgery to remove the 1/2 pound tumor, but the doctor was unable to remove it all (he said he got approximately 90 percent). She is also 8 months pregnant. We are all heartbroken and would like to hear some encouraging stories, if you have any. They are going to deliver the baby within the next couple of weeks, so she can begin radiation and chemotherapy. We have all been inundated with negative news and would really like to hear some encouraging stories.

Thanks so much.

Check out the link. It is the American Brain Tumor Association (abta) website. There is a list of stories from brain tumor survivors and from people who have lost loved ones.

I am a brain tumor survivor (meningioma). I had surgery 3-1/2 years ago and I was lucky because they were able to remove all the tumor. I didn’t need rehab after surgery, and I was able to return to work.

I hope for the very best for your sister, her baby and your family.

That is heartbreaking and I am so sorry. The daughter of one of my friends has this and while I can’t say she was cured, she has lived, and lived fairly well, for several years with it so far. Also my cousin had some sort of brain tumour (don’t know what kind) and while it did ultimately kill her, she lived for many years with only minimal effect on most of her activities.

I have breast cancer, but just stage III. Cancer treatments are difficult for many but they have improved a lot. Radiation therapy techniques are an area of very active research. Imaging techniques are so good that the radiation can be very targeted. Some of the women I know with breast cancer are stage IV with brain metastases and are doing quite well.

It helps to kind of have a plan, your sister will need some assistance with a new baby and treatment. If there is some sort of support system in place it will be easier for her to concentrate on her health and make it easier to tolerate the treatment.

I am really sorry to hear about your sister. I have cancer and have had a very bad seven years. The cancer took away my ability to eat or drink(even water)orally and all has to be pumped directly into my stomach. So – seven years without eating or drinking!! I have no voice but use a creation that gives me clear speech. Now the cancer has returned and more agressively then ever and as I had more then my share with surgeries and hospital rooms, I decided not to go to the hospital or meet my doctors anymore as I did not want to spend the time I have looking at the ceiling and the four walls of the hospital when I could be out enjoying the time I have left.
If you want to read some great Suvivor stories – suggest you go into http://www.rdoc.org.uk. You can also read my story there – under the heading of Ananth’s story. I am sure you’ll get a lot of help there.
    Take care.
